Painter, printmaker

Born in Melbourne in 1920, Bracks' studies at the NGV were interrupted by WWII where he served in the AIF from 1940-46. After this he resumed his studies at the NGV eventually working in the print room there and in 1953 the NGV purchased his first exhibited painting, Barber's Shop. His teaching jobs and art reviews allowed him to devote more time to his painting and in 1968 he resigned from Head of the Art School at the NGV to paint full time.

He exhibited extensively with Rudy Komon, Sydney, Joseph Brown and Tolarno in Melbourne. Four retrospectives of his aworkhave been held since 1977, with the last in 1987 at the NGV. He is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, all state galleries, many regional galleries and numerous private and corporate collections, both nationally and internationally.
